Inside the Story: A Touch of Steel

A couple of months ago, the wonderful and supportive women in my writing group set out a challenge: write a romance short story with a steampunk theme. This gave us a lot of room to experiment while still giving us a concrete goal. The result was Steamy Cogs II, a steampunk short story collection.

For me, steampunk is a mix of past and future, of classic technology with modern sensibilities. Poetry and practicality. So, it seemed logical that science, and the love of science, would be at the core of my story and the key to my heroine, Sara Ramirez.

I have known many women who are passionate about science, from medicine to robotics to veterinary science, and I wanted Sara to convey that same enthusiasm and joy that my friends have shown for their own work.
